Do we possess the capacity to be humane or cruel beyond reproach?

As some of our readers have so boldly foreseen the anguish to come in the scenes broadcasted in the news in all forms, it is with disgust, anguish and abhorrence that most of us may view the scenes of how persons make decisions on life and death in ways that most of us will cringe at the mere thought or get annoyed at the utterance of such suggestions, don't get me wrong I am not only making reference to the current situation in the disaster ravaged island of Haiti, but also in our own societies and countries. Now to just highlight a bit of the present situation, the scenes shown in Haiti of aid relief in all aspects leaves much to be desired, we are grateful that at least after all their lodging in the sticks (logistics) planning and preparation someone had testicular fortitude to step up and just do instead of talking, but the name or names of those unsung heroes will never be listed in the annals of history that will follow all this moreso the greed of some sects of humanity will want to cash in on the plight of our family in Haiti, nonetheless the manner in which it was done was totally chaotic, throwing food from a relief helicopter to people that are already grief stricken, hungry, homeless, tired, depressed and distressed , trying to come to grip with the reality of this harshness that only they know they will have to endure when the smoke clears, it tells me that some persons have no value nor respect for the conditions or circumstances of those in need. Regardless of how much problems they say they are trying to avert it clearly shows that all that's happening is a recurrence of former actions towards empoverished and poor societies even in their best of times. What will prevent this situation from becoming one of those that resembles that of African territories, will this country be left in a state where its people will fight among themselves for a morsel? What do you think will come after that?

"doubts are more cruel than the worst of truths"

  1. Though I read and comprehend your thoughts on the current situation. I really want to ask about your experience in search, rescue and emergency relief? What you are seeing on TV is the simple version of things. The worst has not been seen and may never be seen. Regarding the dropping of food, you have to ask your what the situation was like and were there other options. I think it is only when you are on the ground that you can truly understand the magnitude of the circumstances leading to same.

True, there are heros whose names may never be called or recognized but they will always be heros in the hearts and minds of those who they have saved.

There are many aspects to a situation...its best to review them all before making a decision...or atleast as many as possible.

  2. Its sad to see whats taking place in Haiti, but the mere fact that human effort is being made to help these people, our fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters, must not be over looked. Yes, there is problems with aid reaching the people, but seriously, with the magnitutde of a disaster that happen to this island, not trying to sort things out on the airport properly and then distributing things haywire will only cause more confusion and ache. I think insteading of bashing the people who trying their best to cope with the major task ahead of them, I think if we, who are not there to experience this, know so much better the start emailing, facebooking and twittering recommendations.

  3. now that is something you don't see everyday, we understand the parameters surrounding the logistics, but for my tenure in the search and rescue which has spanned over 10 years, there are always back up plans thatu needto consider and moreso have in place, with that preveiew i have not seen any such system in place , who knows mayber that manner of supplies delivery was adhoc, but yet still although the have tried i still think it could have been done better.
